about 20 minutes
24/7 Gym near Barkhamsted, CT
Out of the state forests and down Route 8: about twenty minutes from Pleasant Valley, twenty-five from Riverton.
Barkhamsted is a town of forest and water: People's State Forest, the Barkhamsted Reservoir, and the West Branch of the Farmington River running through Riverton, the village where Hitchcock chairs were built.
It's one of the longer drives to Atlas, so it helps that members aren't tied to set hours. A key tag gets you in any time, day or night, which means you plan the trip around your week, not around a front desk.
Once you're here you get the whole floor: plate-loaded Hammer Strength, a Sorinex belt squat, an Arsenal pendulum squat, a Valor log bar and fat bars, and the turf room out back.
Getting here
From Pleasant Valley, take Route 318 to Route 44 and follow 44 west into Winsted, then get on Route 8 south. From Riverton, Route 20 brings you into Winsted to pick up Route 8. It's about eight miles south to Torrington; leave at the Route 4 exit and go west to Migeon Ave. Atlas sits at 634, with a free lot out front and another behind the building.
Try the drive before you commit
Twenty-five minutes is easy to do once and harder to keep doing. Before you sign up, buy a one-week or two-week pass and make the trip on the days you'd really train. If it fits, Month to Month asks for no commitment, and the plans with a commitment come with a free InBody scan. If two of you would make the trip, the Couple plan puts both memberships on one bill.
Worth trying on day one
- Log clean and press with the Valor log bar, kept light until the clean feels smooth.
- A few sets with the fat bars, which make every pull harder to hang onto.
- The Arsenal pendulum squat for a deep leg session.
- Sled pushes and pulls in the turf room.
